Le Bambole Settee / 2-Seat Sofa by Mario Bellini for B&B Italia
Italy 1970s
The Bambole series stands as one of the defining statements of Italian design in the 1970s—an object that treats seating not as a frame with padding, but as a continuous upholstered volume. Awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1979, Bellini’s project is rooted in a then-radical idea: comfort as structure, where the inner construction and the outer silhouette are conceived as one.
Seen here, the sofa reads almost like a soft architectural block—its generous curves and precise piping giving it a distinct, sculptural presence in the room. The characteristic “pillowed” geometry is not decorative; it expresses the underlying foam construction, which makes the piece unusually inviting and relaxed while remaining formally controlled.
This example has been newly reupholstered in brown aniline leather and re-padded, presenting the design in a crisp, refreshed state while retaining the original spirit of Bellini’s casual, high-quality approach to living.
