Stoneware Wall Clock by Raymond Peynet for Roger Capron # 2

France 1960s

This charming ceramic wall clock features a whimsical, hand-illustrated scene in a distinctly mid-century French folk-art style. Crafted from textured stoneware, the clock is richly decorated with engraved and hand-colored motifs, including a tender couple riding a stylized bird, surrounded by flowers, celestial symbols, and playful sun and moon faces. The dial is marked with Roman numerals and centered by delicate clock hands, while a ribbon banner beneath reads *“La bonne heure”* (“The right time”), adding a poetic touch. The soft pastel palette and naïve line work give the piece a warm, storybook quality, typical of French decorative ceramics from the period. Signed *Peynet* in the lower corner, the imagery is characteristic of **Raymond Peynet** (1908–1999), the celebrated French illustrator best known for his romantic figures *Les Amoureux* (“The Lovers”). Peynet’s drawings were widely translated into objects of everyday life, including ceramics, where his gentle humor and humanistic themes found a lasting audience. The clock is fitted with a new movement, while retaining the original hands, ensuring reliable timekeeping without compromising the authenticity of its appearance.
