Beni Ourain Carpet
Morocco - 1950s

Handcrafted traditional and high pile Beni Ourain rug from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The fine black lines are made of black sheep wool and were not dyed. This rug is more elaborate than traditional Beni Ouarain rugs, because the effort is in the detail here. The detailed designs were made in laborious manual work and under a very high expenditure of time. It is a unique piece. This rug was woven in the 50's, mainly women doing these weavings. At that time, they not only served as carpets, but were also used for bedtime in Bedouin tents during the cold season. The carpet was cleaned.
