Pierre Chapo S45 Pair of Chairs in Elm Wood

France - 1970s

Pierre Chapo S45 Pair of Chairs in Elm, France 1970s. Original fair condition. In the late 1970s, Pierre Chapo’s work took a new path. In 1979, he unveiled one of the most remarkable designer chairs of the 20th century: the S45, also known as “Chlacc,” named after the patented method used to create it. The S45 is constructed from numerous small wooden segments that are joined and glued together. This technique allowed Chapo to design a delicate, lightweight structure with elegant lines. The S45 chair is both technically and conceptually challenging to produce. The user’s weight is mainly supported by the intersecting “Chlacc” legs, and the back’s stability is achieved by securing it to the two back legs, which are angled at over 45 degrees. Eleven assembly points connect the chair’s seven sections. The S45 is one of the most sculptural designs in Chapo’s collection, a piece that bears a striking resemblance to the iconic tower in the capital city where its creator was born. Contrary to common belief, it is incredibly comfortable.
